Artist Statement

People tend to take pride in things they create. It becomes a part of them and a loved possession, but sometimes people get a little too attached. They let the creation define them which means they would be defined as either success or failure.
This image captures a prime example of that. When young children build anything, like puzzles or Legos, they get so attached that their creation becomes the thing they love most. Therefore, if someone like their older sister comes in and accidentally breaks a piece of their Lego then it means war. When something they make its destroyed or broken then their world ends. This is because all people believe their hard word is shown through their creations. If the creation is gone then what is left to show for the work they have done?
The facial expression of the child in the image expresses a shocked expression because he cannot believe that a part of something he made is broken. It is as if his world has come to an end and it he does not know what to do next. Having an exaggerated emotion on the character’s face was necessary for drawing attention to the shocked/betrayed emotion being felt. However, it also is realistic because children tend to be overdramatic.
Finally, I felt that this image needed to be in color because the color of the room helps add to the character and to the setting. It shows a young boy in his room where he keeps his favorite toy. Without color the emotion and realistic aspects would die down it would be harder for the viewer to relate to the image.
