The concept of “Why?” is a very broad and vague idea but could apply to many different topics. I decided to focus on the idea of why people hurt themselves. It takes lots of unfortunate events, strong feelings, and compulsive thoughts to make the decision that you want to commit suicide. It is also a topic that often gets avoided because it makes people feel uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, it is an often reality in today’s society. People get access to their parent’s weapons or into old prescriptions and find a way to make the pain go away. Lots of the time, these people feel like they have no other option rather than ending their lives. They believe their only way out is suicide, when in fact there are many resources out there for helping people who feel this way.

I photographed a female character who took many pills and now is passed out. The pills were scattered to make it look like they fell after the character lost consciousness. I chose white pills to symbolize an empty feeling in the character because when people think of white, they feel nothing or bland.
