Incomplete
Artist Statement
In today’s society, people have their phone on them every minute of everyday. If someone accidentally leaves their phone at home, they feel naked. Humans have evolved to depend on their phone for everything. We no longer use our brains for simple tasks like remembering to get things done. Instead we rely on a mental square to get it done for us.
When someone does not have their phone, then they feel like a part of them is missing. My image captures a teenage character who is sitting on the ground with her hands interlaced as if she is holding a phone. Even though she does not physically have it, she is set in that motion to make it look like she does. It is like an addict having withdrawal- she doesn’t have the actual phone but cant help but act like she does.
I had the character wear all blue to keep the image monotone and to represent the sadness felt because the character is “incomplete” without their phone. I also sat her in front of a plain wall to keep the image simple and help keep the attention on the character’s hands.
