Artist Statement

Everyone has a past and secrets that they do not feel comfortable sharing. Some people are more open and share everything, while others keep to themselves. A past can be filled with regret, happiness, mistakes, etc. We as humans are imperfect.

This image captures a young character looking at her past memories. The box that she is holding represents her secrets and past life. She wants to start over and gain people’s trust, but her past is hidden from them. It is hard to leave your entire life behind and start new. That is why she has this box filled with pictures, souvenirs, and more from her past. She also does not feel right about lying to the new people in her life because it is hard to build a foundation based on lies. However, she must try because moving on is necessary.

Some people tend to live in the past and do not let small mistakes go. They hold them over your head and bring them up anytime you move forward. It is hard to live your life when people like this are there holding you back. Moving forward is the only way you can get through life and experience things. If you keep looking back, then you will get no where.

This light coming out from the box symbolizes the good parts of her life and her good memories. The few good parts are what make it hard when moving on. For example, when moving on after a breakup, the good times from the relationship cling to you. But you must think of those good things and be glad is happened instead of being sad that is it over.

When shooting this image, it was hard to have the word “memories” stand out because I wanted the only source of light to be coming out of the box, onto the character’s face. But projecting a soft light fixed this problem, while keeping attention on the light coming out of the box.
